Getting it
When can I download it?
Books O' Plenty is in active development and doesn't have a release yet. When the first version is ready, it will be on this site to download.
What does it cost?
Nothing. Books O' Plenty is free, with no subscriptions, no in-app purchases and no ads.
Which Macs does it run on?
Any Mac with macOS 26 Tahoe or later.
Is there a version for iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch?
Not yet. The Mac comes first, and Books O' Plenty will come to iPhone and iPad later on, with an Apple Watch app too.
How do updates work?
The app has a built-in updater. The second time you open it, it asks whether it may check for updates automatically; you can also choose “Check for Updates…” in the app menu, or turn automatic checks off in Settings. Every update is signed, so the app only installs updates that really come from Books O' Plenty.
Your books
Where are my books kept?
In a library you save wherever you like on your Mac. A library is a package ending in .booksoplenty: the Finder shows it as a single file, and inside are the book files and a database with everything about them. Double-click it to open it.
How do I back up my library?
Like any other file. Time Machine includes it, and you can copy it to another disk. We still recommend keeping a backup of your books, as with any app that looks after your files.
Which file formats can I add?
EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW, AZW3, CBZ and plain text. A book can have several formats at once. Files protected with DRM can't be added.
Can I read books in it?
Books O' Plenty looks after your library; Apple Books does the reading. Choose “Open in Books” and the book opens there. Quick Look works too, for a quick peek.
Can I set a reading goal?
Yes. In the Reading Profile, set how many books (and, if you like, pages) you want to finish this year; a ring shows how you're doing and whether you're ahead of schedule. Smart goals add goals with a rule of their own, such as ten paper books. Rereads and books borrowed from the library count too.
Can I keep track of paper books?
Yes. Add them by ISBN or by searching for the title and author. And if you've borrowed a book from the library, the app can remind you a few days before it has to go back.
calibre
Do I need calibre?
No. Books O' Plenty has its own library. calibre is only one way to bring books in.
Will importing change my calibre library?
Never. Books O' Plenty only reads your calibre library and copies the books into its own. You can import again later to bring in new and changed books.
What comes along from calibre?
Your books in every format, covers, identifiers, page counts, reading status, favourites and collections.
Details & privacy
Do I need an account or an internet connection?
No account, ever. The app works offline; it only goes online when you ask it to look something up, and to check for updates.
Where do covers and book details come from?
From Google Books, Open Library, Hardcover and Apple Books, whichever you switch on. Google Books and Open Library work straight away. Google Books can also use your own API key if you look up a lot of books, and Hardcover needs a token from your Hardcover account. Keys and tokens are kept in your Mac's Keychain.
Does it collect any data about me?
No. There's no analytics and no tracking. The privacy statement explains exactly what goes where.
Which languages does it speak?
English and Dutch.
